Creating an incomparable brand is something that everyone should do.

No matter what stage of business you are in, you should never be a cookie-cutter of anyone and yet this is the thing that most people struggle with the most.

You get caught up looking at everyone else thinking how perfect their brand looks.

It looks so polished, so put together and exactly what I want for myself.

That’s a no-no!

The first step in creating an incomparable brand is to discover YOUR OWN brand words. It starts with a few questions and…

….surprise, they’re not just about you

Most people think creating a brand is all about them but really it’s all about your target audience.

So how do you get these brand words?

You answer these four questions and when you do, go with your gut answer.

Do it quickly.
No hesitating.

No second guessing yourself. These are one word adjectives not paragraphs.

Ready, set, here are your questions.

  • How would your clients/customers/audience describe you? (ex: professional, knowledgeable, friendly, approachable, etc.)
  • How would you describe your target audience?(ex: polished, educated, down to earth, charming, etc.)
  • How do you sound to others? (ex: poised, relatable, resourceful, dependable, etc.)
  • How does your target audience feel after working with you? (ex: confident, calm, secure, empowered, etc.)

Those are your questions. Remember you only need one adjective for each question.

Now comes the fun part, you are going to take those words and find their visual equivalent in Pinterest.

I just want to note that one thing that you should not be looking at someone else for is inspiration so keep your eyes focused on your own brand.

No looking at their mood board or color palettes.

This whole process needs to be unique to create something truly authentic to you.

Now after you have all of your Pins you can look at the board as a whole. Look for a pattern.

Do you see a lot of the same shade of blue? Mostly script fonts? Strong role models?

Great, put them together in a mood board. You can use a Grid in Canva to create a mood board.

Creating the mood board is typically the first step in seeing your brand come to life visually.

Now to make sure, it is incomparable – ask yourself: does this board really reflect the feeling of my brand?

It might also help to ask yourself, does this mood board feel: “first adjective”, “second adjective”, “third adjective”, and “fourth adjective”?

If so, you nailed it! If not, change out some pictures until it feels perfect.
