I have said it before but I’m going to say it again — this business stuff is hard especially if you are doing it alone.
I recently hired someone to help me but it is still hard. I have to let go and quit trying to make everything perfect.
Here’s the thing, I love my business but, outside of being responsible for my tiny humans, it is the most challenging thing in my life. Do I want to quit sometimes? Yes, there are days when I really consider it.
But then I get to work on an amazing project and help someone propel their business forward everything is right again.
See this path that I am on has led me to be a better person, wife, mother and friend. It has taught me that I can design my own life without doing what is traditional.
The secret though — keep your eyes on your own paper. I thought that I wanted to have an agency for months so I was trying to build my business around that. Then I realized that if I did that yes I would make more money but money is not the end goal for me – freedom is.
Creating an agency is not the solution and it took me more months than I care to admit to realize it. I was doing what I thought was the next step because I had my eyes on someone else’s paper. But when you start being really honest with what you want for your life then your true purpose becomes clear.
The challenge is that I thought that I really wanted the agency thing. So much so that I was investing and doing things to grow my business in that direction. I don’t consider it a waste of time but I’m quitting it because it is not for me.
What does this story have to do with business – specifically your business? Well it has to do with positioning.
What is positioning?
Positioning is what you are known for. My positioning was so far off because who I would work with in an agency is different than who I want to work with honestly.
Your positioning is the entire base of your business. It’s why you create your services and products. It’s who you create the services and products for. It’s important to know your positioning or else you will be continuously starting over and flailing trying over and over.
When I left California to start my business I had no idea what I wanted and working in corporate I had lost myself. I didn’t know what I wanted from my life other than financial freedom. I fell into that money trap and thought it was the goal.
Yes, I want to help others and I deserve to be paid for it but I do not want to work with someone just because they are paying me big money. I want to work with people whose projects excite me, who I believe in.
Take Action
Really be honest with yourself and consider if your business is going to help you create the life you want. Ask yourself if my business is X will that support the life I want to design.
